Writing Prompt: Banned Words

Many words that used to be offensive, now is just an expression. The country of Israel says for the Holocaust never to be forgotten but is now banning the word “Nazi”. In the article “Banning a hated word?”,  Rabbi Dov Lippmann says “every country has to establish certain value-based limits” when it comes to free speech. I also agree, that many words should be taken more seriously.

The country of Israel would never forget the Holocaust. But they want not to hold a grudge. Lawmakers think that they should ban the word Nazi or any other slur related to the holocaust. But Israel wants also to be a democratic country too. That would also include the freedom of speech. This puts Israel to a controversy. I think that they should set standards where the United States has not. There should be a limit to to free speech and expression. I think that one should not offend others even if they have freedom. Freedom is one thing but using it to an advantage is having the upper hand.

The first amendment protects freedom of expression. That's why a using a slur would not be something serious today in the United States. Being a democratic country, we have rights to free speech as well. But that should not necessarily mean that using it to an advantage makes it right either. I have been called terrorist so many times and I could not say anything because this is a free country and freedom of speech and expression is allowed here. Calling me a terrorist gave many people the upper hand and it brought up memories of 9/11, something I would like to forget. Just like that, so many other slurs can bring up the past wanting to be buried.

Many countries in this world are democratic. Every country has a war or so in its history. Just estimate how many slurs there are then. Free expression and free speech, in my opinion, are to be used for something passionate and good. it is not something to be offended with. But the word Such as Nazi is offending to many people. No one could be helped if they are German, a Jew or anyone else. Saying such words bring up the past. So I agree with Lipman, that there should be limits to free speech. Speak your heart but don't let those words break others.
